The province of Balochistan has witnessed a distressing rise in cases of enforced disappearances, particularly targeting Baloch youth, including students. These incidents involve individuals being forcefully taken from their homes, with their whereabouts remaining unknown. The situation raises grave concerns about human rights violations and the lack of justice for the affected individuals and their families.
In a recent incident in Absor (Turbat), unknown men entered the area during the early hours of July 4 and arrested two Baloch youth, including a student named Salim Baloch. The other victim, Akram Naeem, works as a laborer in the city. These individuals have not been produced in any court of law, leaving their families anxious and uncertain about their well-being.
Balochistan's enforced disappearances have also targeted Baloch teachers and writers. Saki Sawad Baloch, a Baloch teacher and writer known for his online instruction of Balochi writing, was abducted from Turbat a month ago. This incident has raised concerns about the safety of those pursuing education and the stifling of intellectual discourse in Balochistan.
Enforced disappearances have been a persistent problem in Balochistan, with a slowdown observed after 2015, but a resurgence in cases since 2017. The victims, often Baloch youth and students, are either subjected to prolonged physical and mental torture or found as mutilated corpses in what locals refer to as 'fake encounters.' Unfortunately, despite passing remarks on the issue, there has been limited practical action to address enforced disappearances effectively.
The plight of the Baloch people in Balochistan is exacerbated by the escalating incidents of enforced disappearances, particularly among Baloch youth and students. The safety and well-being of individuals like Salim Baloch, Akram Naeem, and Saki Sawad Baloch hang in the balance, highlighting the urgent need for concrete steps to address this ongoing crisis. It is crucial to uphold human rights, ensure justice, and put an end to enforced disappearances in Balochistan.
