On Saturday, a potent earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck western Afghanistan near its border with Iran, resulting in a tragic toll of at least 120 lives lost and over 1,000 people injured.
The earthquake's epicenter was situated approximately 40km from Herat, a major city in the region, and it occurred at around 11:00 AM local time. The impact of the tremors was felt across multiple provinces in western Afghanistan, including Herat, Badghis, Farah, and Nimruz.
Moreover, this seismic event extended its reach beyond Afghanistan's borders, affecting neighboring nations such as Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Iran, emphasizing its significant magnitude and reach.
It's worth noting that this earthquake closely followed another recent quake in Nepal, registering at a magnitude of 6.2. The epicenter of that earthquake was pinpointed near the China-Nepal border, although information regarding casualties and property damage from that incident remains limited at this time.
In northern India, including cities like Lucknow and the capital, Delhi, residents experienced tremors as well. Panic ensued in these densely populated areas, leading to quick evacuations from buildings.
Rescue and relief efforts are currently in progress in Afghanistan to assist the victims of this devastating earthquake.
