In a recent hearing at the Islamabad High Court, Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani presided over a case involving over 50-55 missing Baloch students. The urgency of the matter was underscored by the court's previous directive to caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to facilitate the students' recovery or face the consequences.
Despite the court's clear instructions, the caretaker Prime Minister was notably absent from the proceedings, attributed to his week-long trip to the Mideast. Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan informed the court that 22 missing students had been located and returned home, but 28 remained missing, posing a challenge due to the lack of detailed identification information.
Justice Kayani issued a stern warning during the hearing, stating that if the remaining missing students are not recovered by the next session, legal proceedings would be initiated against top government officials, including the Prime Minister, the Minister of Interior, and the Secretary of Defense.
The court expressed deep concern about the situation, emphasizing the fundamental human rights at stake. Justice Kayani highlighted that allegations often involve state security agencies and stressed the necessity of accountability.
Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti noted overlooked aspects, including cases of individuals traveling to Afghanistan. However, Justice Kayani emphasized that in enforced disappearances, it is often the state's own agencies implicated.
Expressing frustration with the lack of progress, Justice Kayani underscored the need for legal action against guilty parties and insisted on accountability for all agencies involved. In his concluding remarks, he highlighted the state's failure to address the disappearances adequately and warned that if the missing students are not found, legal action will be taken against top officials, including the Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior.
The gravity of the situation was evident as Justice Kayani sternly addressed Bugti, stating, "The Prime Minister and you will then have to go home." The international community must closely monitor this situation, urging swift action to safeguard human rights and ensure accountability for the missing Baloch students.
