In a shocking revelation, Amnesty International, a renowned human rights organization, has brought to light disturbing cases of rape and sexual assault perpetrated by Iranian security forces during a crackdown on nationwide protests that unfolded in September 2022. The magnitude of this abuse, as disclosed in Amnesty's recent report, underscores a harrowing reality of brutality and human rights violations.
The Scale of Abuse:
Amnesty International's investigation documented a staggering 45 cases of rape, gang rape, or sexual violence against protestors. The organization emphasized how Iranian intelligence and security agents systematically used sexual violence as a form of punishment against those involved in the protests.
Data and Victims:
Out of the 45 reported cases, 16 involved rape, affecting six women, seven men, a 14-year-old girl, and two boys aged 16 and 17. Shockingly, six women and two men fell victim to gang rape by approximately 10 male agents, according to the report. The perpetrators included members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Basij Force, Intelligence Ministry agents, and police officers.
Personal Testimonies:
Amnesty International gathered evidence through interviews with victims and witnesses, revealing heartbreaking personal testimonies. Maryam, arrested for not wearing a headscarf during the protests, recounted a horrifying experience of being raped by two agents during interrogation. Another victim, Farzad, disclosed that he and a fellow protestor were subjected to a brutal gang rape by plainclothes agents.
Silenced Voices:
The report highlighted the pervasive fear among victims, with many choosing not to file complaints due to the dread of reprisals. Even those who did approach prosecutors were often ignored, perpetuating a culture of silence and impunity.
International Call to Action:
Amnesty Secretary-General Dr Agnès Callamard expressed concern over the lack of justice at the local level and called upon the international community to stand with the victims and pursue justice. The urgency of this situation underscores the need for global attention and intervention in condemning such heinous acts.
The revelations from Amnesty International's report expose a deeply troubling chapter in Iran's recent history, shedding light on the extensive use of sexual violence as a tool of repression. As the international community becomes aware of these atrocities, the call for justice grows louder. It is imperative for nations and global bodies to unite in condemning such abuses and advocating for accountability to ensure a safer and more just world for all.
