Balochistan, a region marred by persistent human rights violations and enforced disappearances, demands urgent attention from the international community. The recent report released by the PAANK (Human Rights Department of the Baloch National Movement) sheds light on the grave situation in Balochistan. The report exposes the alarming numbers of enforced disappearances, the plight of the Baloch people, and the urgent need for international intervention.
Human Rights Violations in Balochistan: Under the complete control of the Pakistani army, Balochistan has become a region subjected to severe restrictions on the lives of its residents. People are denied the freedom to move without the army's permission, and daily military operations have become a norm. The Pakistani army has even established armed squads, known as death squads, recruiting criminals who engage in activities like harassment, theft, and killings on behalf of the army.
These actions have resulted in unimaginable suffering for the Baloch people, especially women who are harassed and coerced into becoming collaborators. Fear permeates society, preventing individuals from speaking out against these injustices and silently enduring their oppressive circumstances.
The Tragic Case of Bibi Najma Baloch: Bibi Najma Baloch's story exemplifies the devastating consequences of human rights abuses in Balochistan. She was an educated and dedicated young woman who defied the obstacles imposed by the military presence in her community. Despite the army occupying school buildings, she selflessly provided free education to over 100 children in her area.
Tragically, the relentless harassment and coercion she faced at the hands of the Pakistani army and its agent, Noor Bakhsh, took a toll on her mental well-being. Unable to bear the humiliation and the role of an informant, she made the heart-wrenching decision to end her own life. Her case represents the harrowing reality faced by many Baloch individuals who endure similar circumstances.
Enforced Disappearances and Torture: Enforced disappearances have become routine in Balochistan, with the Pakistani army continuing to target individuals. According to the PAANK report, during May 2023 alone, 25 individuals were forcefully disappeared, adding to the thousands who have already suffered a similar fate. Shockingly, only 12 individuals were released from captivity, but they experienced severe mental and physical torture during their ordeal.
The reasons behind these disappearances and the charges against the victims remain undisclosed, leaving families and communities in anguish. The continuous practice of enforced disappearances has not only violated the human rights of the Baloch people but has also severely damaged their physical and mental well-being.
Call for International Intervention: PAANK's report calls on the international community to urgently intervene in the humanitarian crisis in Balochistan. International organizations, human rights institutions, and governments are urged to hold Pakistan accountable for these crimes and work collaboratively to end the abuses.
Moreover, the report recommends deploying human rights monitoring teams to investigate and document the situation on the ground. Support from organizations advocating for human rights, protecting victims, and demanding justice is also crucial to bring attention and relief to the Baloch people.
The severity of the human rights crisis in Balochistan demands immediate action. The international community must prioritize the restoration of human rights and the well-being of the Baloch people. The perpetrators of human rights violations and enforced disappearances must be held accountable, and justice must be ensured.
By standing in solidarity with the Baloch population and amplifying their voices, we can collectively bring about meaningful change and work towards a future where human rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled for all. The time to act is now, to bring an end to the suffering and restore dignity to the people of Balochistan.
